Cris Johnson (Nicolas Cage), es un mago de Las Vegas bendecido con un don que también es una maldición: cuenta con la sobrenatural capacidad de saber qué va a ocurrir a continuación.
Johnson puede ver el futuro unos cuantos minutos más allá del momento presente, un talento extrasensorial que, sin duda, le viene muy bien para su trabajo como mago y mentalista en el sórdido club de Las Vegas donde actúa cada noche.
Es un don que también tiene su utilidad en las mesas de black jack, especialmente cuando anda algo corto de dinero.
No obstante, su talento no es un truco barato, como tampoco su destreza en el manejo de los portales temporales ha pasado desapercibida.
